The focus of the talk is based starts on the differences between the various degrees (MD vs DO, RN/NP/LPN, DMD/DDS etc). The discussion then shows the students which schools in the area offer which programs, the duties of each role and how they work together in the health care industry.
For classes that include general students such as career classes, the talk covers the jobs that are associated with health care that do not include patient care or those who "do not like blood". These would include computer networking and security, marketing, graphic design and HVAC and construction.
Based on my experience as the admissions director at LECOM, I discuss what medical schools look for in a good student and dispel some of the myths associated with applying to medical school such as the college that a student attends, or having perfect grades. I also discuss how the match process works when medical students apply to residencies after medical school.
When talking to career center or vocational technical students, I focus more on the careers available since these students are more focused on the medical career and already understand the challenges of the career they want to pursue.
