Experience Details

Objectives of the project: The TIW will prepare educators to provide relevant and innovative student learning opportunities aligned to up-to-date needs of the workforce. The program will support school districts in their continuous school improvement efforts by providing guidance for the development of local 339 plans and in meeting the requirements of the Future Ready PA Index. Participants will make meaningful and beneficial connections with employers in the region enhancing opportunities for students.

Description of the project: The Northwest Teacher in the Workplace (TIW) program will provide an opportunity to connect 30 educators from 17 school districts, 5 charter schools and 4 career and technical centers in Erie, Crawford and Warren counties to regional manufacturing and healthcare businesses/employers. Participants will participate in a 30-hour course, which will include “on-the-job” learning experiences in STEM related jobs. Participants will develop innovative project-based learning lessons and present them at a culminating session consisting of all stakeholders. Each participant will receive a full day of technical assistance in the classroom and ongoing support. The TIW program will be offered twice, once in the fall and once in the spring, to provide flexibility for enrollment. Participants will be eligible to earn Act 48 credits and districts will be eligible for reimbursement for up to $250 to cover the cost of substitute teachers and personnel time.

Potential impact of the project: Local educators will have the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills needed to deliver a contextualized, relevant, and practical curriculum aligned to local occupational trends. Participants will learn strategies for developing innovative project-based learning experiences aligned to the PA Career Education and Work Standards, and gain first-hand experience which will inform career pathway and K-12 Comprehensive School Guidance/ Career Education (Ch. 339) plan development. Participants will learn about industry trends, needs, and career pathways to enhance their instruction. The program will encourage business partners to engage in school district advisory councils and provide input for curriculum development and workplace experiences for students.
