Experience Details

I want in invite you to be an employer in this year’s REACH program offered by the Sight Center of Northwest PA and PA’s Department of Labor and Industry’s Office of Vocational Rehabilitation – BBVS & BVRS.

REACH, Readiness for Employment and Career Happiness, is an 8 week summer program occurring every Monday from June 13th to August 8th, except July 4th. This program will work with students on their workplace readiness skills and help them understand what careers are available in the Erie Community. The dates we still have available are: June 13th, June 20th, June 27th, July 11th, July 21st, and August 1st.

The REACH program will consist of 11 students with disabilities in 9th or 10th grade who attend Perseus House Skills Center. There will also be 6 staff members involved from the Sight Center, BBVS or OVR’s Erie District office.

Each Monday students will attend a Career Readiness workshop at the Sight Center. Topics include: disability advocacy, IEP training, communication skills, workplace safety, sexual harassment, resume writing, conflict resolution, interviewing skills and financial planning.

After lunch the students will be transported to an employer’s location where we will tour the facility and learn about opportunities the employer has to offer. The students will then perform a job task for one hour at the employers’ establishment. . This job task could be anything you would typically have volunteers do. For example: washing tables, organizing books, filing, preparing packets, painting walls, cleaning wheelchairs, maintenance work. The sky is the limit with the job task portion. While completing the job task youth will be supervised by Sight Center, BBVS and BVRS staff. In total the students will be at the employer’s location from 12:30PM-2:30PM.

If you are interested in being an employer for the REACH program or have questions, please contact me, Hillary Hubbell the Early Reach Coordinator at OVR, as soon as possible. You can reach me at 814-651-9000, 814-873-7006 or via email at Hhubbell@pa.gov.

Experience Requirements

The schedule we have outlined for the employer portion of REACH is listed below. This will give you an idea of what we are looking for in an employer. Again, the job task can really be anything you need done. If you have two different jobs because you cannot fit all eleven youth with the six of our staff in one spot that is fine too. The students will be receiving an incentive through the program, thus no pay is necessary.

Afternoon Schedule:

12:00-12:30 Travel to Employer

12:30-13:15 Employer Speech and Tour

Employers would start by discussing the business, their mission, positions available, job duties, appropriate disability advocacy, and accommodations that have been made to accommodate employees. The employer would also give us a tour of the facility.
